Most devices (laptops etc) that use 2.5 inch drives only provide 5v power for them. This particular drive requires 5v and 12v power. This is the same as for a normal 3.5 inch drive. This drive can be used in a PC or NAS which provides 12v power. It cannot be used in conjunction with an external 2.5 inch enclosure that is powered directly from the USB interface. Such enclosures only provide 5v (which is taken directly from USB). Some USB to SATA adaptors allow a separate 12v supply to be attached. But these can cost much more than the drive itself. These drives get hot under normal operation so I would recommend using a fan to keep them cool. Using them in a case without adequate ventilation will shorten their working life. Scan is currently offering them at a good price if you don't need higher capacity. Otherwise the cost per gigabyte is on a par with a cheap 1 TB drive. Even higher if you need to add a 2.5 to 3.5 inch bracket adaptor.

My CCTV stopped recording and upon inspection I found that the HDD had stopped spinning and thus was broken. After searching the net I found this one from SCAN which was a very similar spec to the one that failed. After buying it the HDD arrived promptly and was connected up later that evening and tested the next day. I am very pleased to sat that it is working perfectly, and at the price it represents amazing value, THANK YOU scan.

This drive is idling over 6 degrees C hotter than my current drive; however with the case open it does not exceed 46 degrees under load which is acceptable. Given what it cost I am happy with it.

Fast but noisy drive. Taller than most 2.5" hard drives so check whether it will fit in your computer first. Unlikely to fit in most laptops due to its larger size.
