This is the sharpest camera lens I have ever owned. The tiny feather details it captures on birds is astounding. I am using it coupled with small pixel bodies with no anti-aliasing filter (D500 or D850) and I am repeatedly thrilled to bird with it. Even massively cropped this combo can really perform -- even if cropped to where pixels are shown 1:1 on screen, it still looks sharp. The out of focus areas and the color rendition can make scenes look like paintings. The bokeh is gorgeous at f/4 and the lens is still insanely sharp. This is a breathtaking optic. I used a 500mm G for the year prior and this lens handily beats it for birding. The additional image scale from the extra 100mm is a very big deal. I had to tune auto-focus on my D850 to +15 for my sample of this lens.

Initial testing indicates that lens is quite sharp. Shooting in the real world will hopefully validate that assessment.

The other reviews have already described it well. This is a superb optic.

I was able to find a used version through B&H which saved a few bucks over new and I am glad I did. I owned the old 600 f4G version and the weight of the lens made it cumbersome. When I opened the case of the new 600 FL version it was an epiphany similar to unboxing the 300 PF and seeing the weight savings versus its predecessor. It is still a giant lens but cutting the weight down to 8.5lbs from over 11 makes a tremendous difference in usability. I no longer dread lifting the lens out of my backpack. Optical quality is stellar as would be expected from a lens like this. Balances great on a gimbal head and is actually hand hold-able in a pinch if needed...no way I would have tried with the G version.

I owned the AF-S 500mm G VR and this new 600mm f/4E weighs the same but is definitely bigger to transport and carry around. I find the image quality to be better in every regard. Focus is extremely snappy and it takes the TC-1.4E very well. I went on a 7 hour hike yesterday and I took my 200-500 f/5.6 and left the 600 at home. I won't be able to do long hikes with it, but will use it at every opportunity I can. Incredible sharpness and smooth out of focus backgrounds. The accessories are definitely a consideration, around $2K spent on beefier tripod, gimbal, monopod and bags but that's just part of owning this lens.
