I bought this lens back in 2011 when I planning a trip around the Rockies in Canada. For me the lens had to have sharp results, but be compact, light and rugged. This lens matched all of those qualities and gave me pin sharp results. I did not find its variable aperture an issue, and was able to capture everything from grizzly bears to bees and raptors. One of Canon's best lenses at an affordable price for the quality.

I purchased this for my wife. Our EF 100 - 400mm f/4-5.6L IS II USM Lens was proving too heavy for her to carry and use all day. The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens is a great solution when weight is an issue and you still need reach and is very well priced.

Well I have tried the lens out today after getting receipt this morning. Not for professional use perhaps but with image stabilisation and compact size. Great for zooming in on subjects and even good with macro use. Does what I need for now.

Up to around 240mm, IQ is excellent. Beyond that its still good but not great. A very good alternative to the bigger, much more expensive 70-200 lenses if f4-5.6 is OK for your needs.

I needed a nice zoom lens for an upcoming trip. My go-to lens is a 24-105 but I really wanted something that would give me more zoom, and not take up tons of space. This lens really fits the bill. Its measures 5.6 in length and weighs 2.36 pounds. Its 1 longer and 1/2 pound heavier than my 24-105 so carrying it is not that much different. The lens is very well made and the images are nice and sharp.
