Would be excellent as a NAS or server drive, but not as a consumer device. I will likely end up returning this because the loudness during idle is very noticeable. Hard to find a large drive with good performance that doesn't have these issues.

I was able to move all my family photos and videos to this drive and it was working fine. I hardly used the drive to very much after moving the media. Now after 4 month, it started to make this clicking noise and it would not appear in windows explorer. Now does not make sound at all no spin. IT IS USELESS

I’m using this as the main drive for my Synology DS220+ NAS. I’ve had the system up for 3 months, and have been happy thus far. The drive is a little louder than I’d hoped, but I’ve been so spoiled by silent SSD drives that any noise feels like too much. I’ll come back in a year or two to give an update on the drive’s health.

The only downside with WD Gold drives for me is the noise: I have bought a number of these, and I don't remember any of them as running silently, although some have been noisier than others. This one is in the middle of the spectrum: the first day or so, it was notably silent but it's now developed a moderate clicking noise. Speed testing with hdparm shows excellent speed. The only downside to this purchase was the shoddy shipping: the shipper used no cushioning of any sort. I don't remember ever buying a hard drive that was shipped in such a casual fashion.
